The Swift Current Broncos continued a fun early season ride by scoring four third period goals on the way to a 6-2 win over Lethbridge.

Aleksi Heponiemi put the cherry on it with a goal of the year candidate midway through the third period that extended Swift Current's lead to 4-2.

“I made a move and got lucky with that,” Heponiemi said. “Had a chance to get the goalie out of position and scored a goal. A goal is a goal it doesn't matter how you do it.”

The goal was part of a third period explosion that pushed the Broncos from a 2-2 tie to their seventh consecutive win.

“It was a pretty exciting game,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “Two pretty good teams. They didn't take the play to us but they disrupted a lot of our play. We got away from our game a little bit. They played very good though. They came here with a game plan and they executed for most of the night.”

It was a penalty filled game as the Broncos went 2 for 9 on the power play, while Lethbridge went 2 for 7. 14 of those power plays took place during the first two periods.

“Way too many penalties today,” Heponiemi said. “Obviously the game doesn't go always how you want it, but we came out in the third period and we knew we were a better team so we just outworked them.”

All that power play time resulted in lots of ice time for each team's top player and limited flow through the lineups.

“Some guys didn't see as much action as the others,” Smith said. “It was the same on their side they had their top guys out power play and penalty kill. Then it becomes an issue of putting guys out there who hadn't been out in a long time and that's not fair to anybody.”

Tyler Steenbergen opened the scoring for the Broncos on a first period power play. He extended his goal scoring streak to six games and his empty net goal later in the game moved him up to 15 on the season. He has scored at least twice in five of the Broncos' seven games.

The next three goals would come on Lethbridge power plays.

Giorgio Estephan tied the game at 1 with his first period one-timer and Calen Addison's point shot midway through the second period pulled the Hurricanes ahead.

Swift Current then took advantage of a collision between two Hurricanes as Conner Chaulk set up Kaden Elder for a shorthanded goal.

Logan Flodell made 36 saves through the second period and 45 overall to earn his sixth straight win.

“He stood pretty strong in the first two periods,” Smith said. “He was a big piece of the puzzle tonight. I thought he was our best player in blue for the first forty minutes. He was the main reason we were able to be where we were and then the third period we had his back.”

Riley Stotts pulled the Broncos ahead on an early third period power play as he pulled the puck out of a scrum in the Lethbridge crease to shoot home his second goal of the season. Stotts, Chaulk and Elder each had two points on the night.

“Riley was flying,” Smith said. “He was flat out flying. He had some opportunities and made some guys miss. When he's going it's fun to watch. Chaulk is Chaulk. He just played a solid game down the middle. He's reliable, smart and made some good plays offensively. I thought (Elder) was a top guy and tonight he just plays the right way. Blocked shots, he knocked a couple of their guys around... it's nice to see those guys get on the score-sheet.”

Heponiemi then scored a spectacular goal dancing through two Hurricanes before beating Stuart Skinner.

“He's a special player,” Smith said. “He's got a lot of confidence and knows what he wants to do with the puck. I don't think anyone else knows what he's going to do with it. That's fun to watch.”

Max Patterson knocked an Artyom Minulin pass out of mid-air to score his first as a Bronco before Steenbergen's empty-net goal rounded out the scoring.

Minulin had three assists on the night.

Swift Current takes their 7-0 record into two more home games on the weekend this Friday against Vancouver and Saturday against Edmonton.
