A dream start to the season continued for the Swift Current Broncos as they ran their record to 5-0 with a 5-2 win in front of a sold out crowd for their home opener.

Tyler Steenbergen scored twice more, while Aleksi Heponiemi and Colby Sissons each had a goal and three assists in the victory.

“I think we've been playing really well,” Sissons said. “Obviously our top line has been doing a lot for us. They play really well in our own zone too that's what we've been doing just taking care of the D-zone and the offence is taking care of itself.”

Steenbergen's goals were his 11th and 12th of the season as he has averaged a hat trick in his last four games.

Dating back to the end of last season and playoff this was the eight consecutive sell out crowd for the Broncos and it didn't go unnoticed by the players.

“The carry over from playoffs is awesome,” Sissons said. “The fans have been great all last year and looks like it's going to be a great crowd this year with all the season ticket holders.”

Swift Current played a very solid game overall allowing only 21 shots and staying in control most of the way.

“We did a lot of good things tonight,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “We kept it simple at times, our power play was pretty good working it around... it was a solid effort.”

While the top line of Steenbergen, Heponiemi and captain Glenn Gawdin was again dominant and all three scored, the Broncos felt like they got opportunities out of their whole lineup.

“Things are going well for us offensively right now with certain guys,” Smith said. “Actually tonight I thought some secondary guys had some opportunities just a little snake bit. It's only a matter of time. (Stotts) had the puck on his stick a lot tonight, (Barlage) had some chances, I thought Max Patterson against his old team created some opportunities, (Gable) had some chances and you know eventually they're going to break through. We're going to need that. You can't live and die by one line.”

The 5-0 start is helped by a strong crew of veteran defenceman who didn't have to work to get chemistry after playing together previously.

“Getting that confidence the last few years we all kind of know where each other is going to be,” Sissons said. “We're not really feeling each other out... we're using it to our advantage right now.”

Four points from Sissons moves him into a tie for second among top scoring WHL defencemen.

“Sissons sees the ice so well he makes plays that a lot of guys can't,” Smith said. “More importantly they're cleaning up our own end we're only giving up a couple goals each game which always gives us a chance.”

The offensive side of the game is something Sissons looks to improve after the departure of Max Lajoie to the pro ranks this season.

“I want to contribute,” Sissons said. “The last few years I've watched Max. He's done a lot for this team the last three-four years and now he hopefully passed the torch back to me and I'm looking to do exactly what he did. He carried this team from the back end and that's what I'm trying to do for us.”

Heponiemi and Sissons set up Steenbergen for his 11th of the season midway through the first period in front of a packed house. The goal came right after a strong shift for Logan Barlage, Max Patterson and Kole Gable that tired out Kootenay's defenders.

Swift Current pulled ahead 3-0 in the second period as Steenbergen put in a Heponiemi rebound and Sissons struck off a Kootenay skate on the power play.

The ice got a break on Tanner Sidaway's goal when his initial shot bounced awkwardly off of Broncos netminder Logan Flodell and under his pads. That got the Ice within striking distance to start the third period before a Gawin power play again put the game out of reach.

Flodell made 19 saves in 21 Kootenay shots to earn his fourth straight win since joining the Broncos. Former Swift Current goaltender Bailey Brkin stopped 29 of 34 Broncos shots in his return to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex with Kootenay.

Swift Current kept their lineup fresh after a win in Saskatoon on Friday by switching out five players from that lineup. Both victories allowed them to rest their top line for a lot of the third period.

The Broncos also honoured longtime volunteer Dennis Loeppky by posthumously inducting him into their Hall of Fame in a pre-game ceremony.

Swift Current will play their third game in three days when they head to Moose Jaw on Sunday afternoon against the 5-0 Warriors.

“We've played five really good hockey games but no team we've played yet is like the Moose Jaw Warriors,” Sissons said. “We're familiar with them from last year... it's a rivalry, it's going to be a battle and our third game in three nights we're going to have to gut out a win.”

This will be the first regular season game between the two clubs since Swift Current beat Moose Jaw in a tightly contested seven game first round series.

“It's our rival,” Smith said. “It's important this first game of this season series against them we come out strong. We're going to have to be smart this is three in two and a half days... but I'm excited. I think guys are excited to play that game. It's going to be a good test.”

You can hear the game live on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 3:30pm.
