Swift Current's top line continues to exceed expectations.

Tyler Steenbergen, Aleksi Heponiemi and Glenn Gawdin combined for 11 points as the Broncos beat Lethbridge 6-0.

Steenbergen scored twice and had two assists, Gawdin also scored twice with an assist and Heponiemi scored once with three helpers.

“We're doing great but we can still do a bit better,” Heponiemi said. “We have to be better in the defensive zone still. We're just moving the puck, skating hard and doing the work.”

It was quite a weekend for Heponiemi who had a two goals and seven assists in two games.

“It's just bounces once and a while,” Heponiemi said. “It's just once and a while it gets done.”

Steenbergen had eight points over the two games.

Swift Current got off to a great start when Heponiemi deflected a Steenbergen pass out of mid-air and in for his 14th goal of the season only 12 seconds into the game

“You get a good start” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “After that we got a couple power plays and capitalized on that. We just played the right way. We kept it simple and we kept putting it behind them. Power play generated some more chances and some more goals. A pretty solid effort by most of the guys tonight.”

Steenbergen and Gawdin both scored to take advantage of a 5 on 3 power play later in the period and the Broncos were in firm control. Gawdin added another goal early in the second.

“The points are one thing,” Smith said. “Just the plays they make... they're clicking. They're one of the top lines in Canada and they're fun to watch. We're lucky to see them every game and in practices.”

Max Patterson factored in on that second power play goal with an assist and provided a screen for the first unit in place of the injured Artyom Minulin.

“He's a big body,” Smith said. “It's hard to see around him. The goalie is ducking and diving. With the shooters we have that's good. He's knows where to go and he can handle himself in front of the net. Guys get opportunities when other guys are down.”

Minulin was hurt on a hit from behind by Blades defenceman Seth Bafaro on Friday. Bafaro received a to be determined suspension, while Minulin doesn't have an official timetable for his return as of yet.

Kaden Elder banked a backhand off the back of Hurricanes goalie Reece Klassen early in the third before Steenbergen added his second of the night and 26th of the season.

Steenbergen (46), Heponiemi (46) and Gawdin (38) are now first, second and third among WHL points leaders.

Flodell earned his third shutout of the season despite having to face 20 Hurricanes shots in the third period with Swift Current's top line mostly resting.

“Good on him he stayed focused throughout the game,” Smith said. “He stepped up. He had some point blank chances in the last seven or eight minutes. I'm sure that's an individual stat he's happy to get, but the two points is the most important thing.”

Swift Current wore special Remembrance Day themed jerseys designed by former Broncos captain Taylor Vause.

The Broncos have now won three straight games and sit at 13-3-1-0 with the best winning percentage in the WHL. They will host the East Division leading Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday.
