The Swift Current Broncos fought down to the final seconds to win the battle of undefeated teams 4-3 over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Thanksgiving Sunday.

Broncos fans can give thanks for one of the best starts in recent memory as they're now 6-0 on the season including three wins in three days this weekend.

“It was pretty gritty,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “It felt like a playoff game. Real happy with our performance.”

The Broncos had a 3-1 lead entering the third period and the Warriors kept pushing back. Each time they did Swift Current had an answer in a game that had the kind of intensity that made last season's first round playoff series between the two clubs a classic.

“We have a good rivalry with these guys,” Smith said. “It's two teams that don't like each other much. It's physical and fast and felt like we just picked up from the seven game series.”

Connor Chaulk scored the winning goal for Swift Current midway through the third period as he put home the rebound of a Kole Gable shot to at that point give the Broncos a 4-2 lead. It was a solid outing at both ends of the rink for Chaulk who is making his case to earn a spot on the roster before the overage deadline on Tuesday.

“Connor played a real solid game in both ends and gets a big goal,” Smith said. “He was good for us tonight.”

It was a strong game by goaltender Logan Flodell who made 31 saves including many tough stops through traffic in the third period for his fifth consecutive win with the Broncos.

Swift Current opened the scoring on an Aleksi Heponiemi shot top shelf over Brody Willms for his third of the season. The Warriors answered when Justin Almeida drove the net and sniper Jayden Halbgewachs jammed the rebound by Flodell for a 1-1 tie after the first period.

Tyler Steenbergen added to his WHL lead in goals with his 13th of the season early in the second period as Glenn Gawdin and Heponiemi worked together to spring him behind the Moose Jaw defence. Steenbergen has scored in five straight game and is five goals ahead of his nearest competitor for the goal scoring lead early this season.

Sahvan Khaira then extended Swift Current's lead by jumping on a Warrior turnover and ripping a quick shot on net. The rebounded bounced off a Warrior as Kaden Elder was battling with him in front.

Elder earned the praise of his coaching staff for that and several key plays defensively as the Broncos held off Moose Jaw in the third.

“He was very good,” Smith said. “He's been flying under the radar. He's a guy that does everything right. He knows the systems, he blocks a ton of shots and he's been a real good 200 foot player for us. I can't say enough things about Kaden.”

Swift Current went 0 for 4 on their power play, but also managed to hold Moose Jaw to 0 for 5 on theirs.

The Broncos now sit alone on top of the Eastern Conference standings and five of their six wins have come on the road. They are home for three games this week when Lethbridge visits the Innovation Credit Union iPlex on Tuesday, followed by Vancouver on Friday and Edmonton on Saturday.
