The SHSAA 2017 Golf Provincial Championships wrapped up on Saturday in Estevan.

Ninety-seven of the best male and female golfers from the SHSAA competed against one another at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club.

Five golfers, four from Swift Current and one from Eastend represented the southwest.

Swift Current Comp High's Gaige Calkins finished with the best score among golfers from the southwest. He finished in 11th place with a 159, 11 shots back of the leader.

Ethan Fizell finished in a tie for 13th, Griffin Wilson tied for 15th, and Nikhil Pool rounded out the Comp team in 61st.

The individual finishes helped the Swift Current Comp golf team to come in fourth place out of twelve teams.

Meanwhile, Rylan Egland of Eastend finished in 39th.

Dave Sandomirsky, the assistant executive director for the SHSAA, talked about how the weekend went.

"It was awesome," Sandomirksy said. "Of course like any competition, there were some highs and some lows, you had some golfers that had big smiles on their face and that were really happy with their performances. Sports just like life, things don't come together for you, so we had some athletes that enjoyed the experience but maybe didn't golf as well as they wanted, but overall the two days it was just a really great celebration of high school athletics."

Jace Carlise from Estevan took home first place on his home course. He shot 73, and a 75 for a combined 148.

Colby Friedrich from North Battleford Comp came in second with a 153.

Brody Istace from Kindersley, Jayden Dudas from Estevan, and Parker Noln-Ens from Warmen tied for third place.

On the girl's side of things, Tenesha Pompu of Carrot River won the gold with a 179.

Casey McLean of Lumsden, Jayden Bauer from St. Walburg and Lauren Fox from Creighton all tied for second place and finished one shot back of the leader.

Sandomirsky said that despite the weather didn't cast a cloud over the golfers.

"It's funny because all summer we've had beautiful and sunny weather, then all of a sudden it's time for provincials, and we have a weather system come through," Sandomirsky said. "On Friday in the middle of the day, we had some lightning and thunder which meant we had to delay the golf for about an hour. We brought all of the athletes into the clubhouse and let the storm pass over, and then let the athletes went back out to finish their rounds. On Saturday it was dry all day, overcast but calm and it was a nice day to be out golfing."

Next year the Provincial Golf Championships will be hosted at North Battleford.
