Scoring came early and often yesterday for the Swift Current Comp Colts football team, as they defeated the Weyburn Eagles 32-16 at home.

It was a bit of a tale of two halves for the Colts, though both were positives for the team.

The Colts piled all their points on the board in the first two quarters, leaping out to a quick 32-3 lead at halftime.

Running back Shane Friesen rumbled in from 17 yards out for the game's first score at the 10:25 mark of the first quarter, with Ethan Kurtz converting the extra point.

Inside two minutes remaining in the first, quarterback Austin Beverly-Collins scored on a rush from nine yards out - another Kurtz convert made it 14-0 after the first.

Into the second quarter, the Colts' special teams took over to widen the gap for good.

Rhett Vavra returned a Weyburn punt 78 yards to the house six minutes into the quarter.

Then, just over a minute later, a high punt snap from Weyburn backed the Eagles to their goal line, with the Colts downing the punter at the half-yard line.

Running back Jordan Lamontagne needed to merely lean forward with the ball to score the Colts' final touchdown. Vavra scored a two-point conversion on a high snap to make it 29-0.

A pair of field goals closed the first half, as Ethan Kurtz booted one through the uprights from 26 yards, while Weyburn's Parker Mantei split the uprights from 20 yards out.

"We had a really good first half, came out and scored a bunch of points. We had some things we talked about at halftime about cleaning up," said Colts head coach Derek Murdoch. "Then in the second half, we made sure we emptied the bench and got all our guys in."

Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter, with Weyburn adding a pair of touchdowns with 10:29 and 2:21 left in the game.

Final stats in the game saw Beverly-Collins go 7-of-13 for 96 yards through the air, while backup Carter Moberg went 1-of-4 for 11 yards.

Nolan Klein led the team in receiving, catching a pair of passes for 43 yards. Austin Klimm and Owen Ljunggren each had one reception for 19 yards, while Vavra caught two for 18 yards.

On the ground, Friesen gained 97 yards on 14 carries to the lead the way. Lamontagne chipped in 26 on seven rushes, while Beverly-Collins added 20 on nine carries.

"Good day for us, I mean we had some mistakes in the second half, but there were guys out there that were getting their first chance to kind of play more than one or two plays," noted Murdoch. "Any time you get a win it's a good thing. Then when you get 48 guys into the game, then that makes it even better. I think that, for us, it's important that the guys that come and work every day get a chance to get out there when we can get them in."

The developmental second half came at a good time in the season for the Colts, as they played their third of four games in a stretch of two weeks.

The fourth contest should be by far the toughest match up for the 3-0 Colts, as they head to Moose Jaw to take on the Central Cyclones this weekend.

The Cyclones are 2-1 on the season. They opened the season with a 38-0 win over Moose Jaw Vanier, and fell 38-14 to the defending league-champion Yorkton Raiders. However, the Cyclones rebounded with a 28-16 win over Moose Jaw Peacock yesterday afternoon.

"They're a good football team - I mean yeah it's nice to be 3-0, but this is going to be a real test for our football team," Murdoch explained. "We've got three days to kind of prep for that. The weather looks like it could be a little interesting on Saturday, so that should be making things a little more fun."

With rain, or possible snow, in the gameday forecast for the weekend, the Colts aren't expecting the prolific passing Cyclones offence to alter their attack much.

"Well they have a grade 12 quarterback that can sling it, and they've got a couple of big, athletic receivers," shared Murdoch. "So, they're going to want to sling it whether the weather is beautiful or gross - they're going to try and do what's good for them. We're just going to be ready to go with our defensive gameplan to do what we can to battle that, and we'll see what happens."

The Colts and Cyclones kick off September 22 at 4 p.m. in Moose Jaw.

"We're going to go and see where we're at," Murdoch added. "It's one game - we're hopefully going to do all the little things right and get a W, but it's going to be a really good test for our team."
