Following their selection of Fort Saskatchewan captain Alex Thacker in the in the 6th round of the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, the Swift Current Broncos dipped back into the Rangers program to select defenceman Daron Cyr in the 7th round.

"He was actually one of the first people I texted and we were very happy to go to the same team," Cyr said after realizing he and Thacker were now both Swift Current prospects.

"We talked a lot this season and got along really well, so I was very happy."

As any 15-year old normally would be on a typical Thursday, Cyr was at school when he had been selected.

"I was in class and my brother came in," he said.

"He told me I got drafted and it was a surreal moment. I didn't know what to say or what to do, it was just really awesome."

Hailing from St. Albert, Alberta, Cyr spent his past two seasons playing with the Fort Saskatchewan Bantam 'AAA' Rangers of the Albert Major Bantam Hockey League.

The 2002-born defenceman 1 goal and 3 assists in 32 games during his 2015-16 campaign before going on to post 7 goals and 18 assists in 36 games over the 2016-17 regular season.

When asking Cyr about the offensive success he enjoyed this year, he simply credited his teammates.

"I had great players surrounding me which helped me out to get my offence moving," he said.

"I just tried to make good passes and that way our forwards were able to score."

Cyr, along with Thacker, enjoyed a strong run that saw them help lead their Fort Saskatchewan team to an Alberta Provincial title, as well as a Westerns bronze medal.

"I found we had a great team and we gelled really well," he said.

"Saying that we won the (Alberta Provincial Championship) we had a great season. We played as a team and I thought everyone excelled. Considering we had seven players drafted I feel we did a really good job with our team."

After reaching the league semi-finals last season, the 5'10", 140lbs defenceman felt getting another year older and getting an extra year of experience made the difference in winning the AMBHL this season.

"We were more focused on the little small details," he said.

"I found that is what made our team go far this year."

As a player himself, Cyr likes to get on the scoresheet when he can.

However, he feels his skill set is much more valuable in his own end.

"I am a two-way defenceman but I am really good in my defensive zone," he said.

"I play to keep the puck out of our net and get the puck out of our zone so our forwards can get opportunities in the offensive zone."

With the draft in the rear-view mirror, the focus now switches to trying to make the jump to the WHL.

Cyr feels there are a couple specific things he further needs to develop before that next stop become possible.

"Gaining more weight," he said.

"I need to get a little bigger so I can play with the big boys, and get a little quicker so I can keep up with them."

Currently weighing in at 140lbs, the gym will be a big part of his summer plans.

"Hitting the gym and skating with several coaches," Cyr said.

"Just getting bigger and gaining more muscle."

But for now, just focusing on the accomplishment of being drafted, the 15-year old says things couldn't get much better.

"I'm happy I went to an awesome organization like Swift Current," said Cyr.
