Despite weather that threatened not to cooperate, restrictions in place due to COVID-19 leaving some would-be spectators disappointed, last weekend's races put on at the airport by the Swift Current Drag Racing Association (SCDRA) were a success.

Greg Mackay is with the SCDRA. He explained that the 150 spectator limit meant some people, unfortunately, had to be turned away at the gate.

"Some of the people were a little disappointed with us, but it was part of the rules and regulations that we had to abide by so we had to limit the people. And there were some people at the gate that weren't happy but they all know the rules and regulations now. So other than that, the car count was really strong and it was good. I mean, other than a little rain we had a really good turnout."

That count totalled 237 racers across both days, with 141 participants on Saturday and 96 on Sunday across three classes; Sportsman, Pro and Super-pro.

Mackay praised the competitors.

"It was hard competitions. There were a lot of good competitors there's a lot of good racers there from all over Saskatchewan and the competitors did well."

The safety measures, for the most part, seemed to do their job well, and Mackay says that the 150 spectators who were allowed in all behaved themselves accordingly; doing a good job of keeping social distance. He cautioned however that he was not too sure what would happen moving forward.

With another event coming up near the end of August, the uncertainty of COVID makes it unclear if they'll be dealing with the same spectator limitations as this past weekend.

"We're in conversation with the city of Swift Current and the SHA, and we're checking things out for future events. We're waiting to see what the SHA comes down with. We have an event later in August and they're going to come up with some suggestions for us; whether it stays the same or whether we get to increase the number."
