The Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats are set to open the 2017-18 season this weekend.

Coming off scoring 17 goals over three games of their preseason tournament last weekend, the Wildcats are headed to Weyburn to take on the Goldwings.

Wildcats head coach Terry Pavely says he and the coaching staff was impressed with the offensive presence around the net by his team in the preseason, and looks to continue that to start the regular season.

However, Pavely did identify a few things they needed to tune up - although he added that, at this point in the season, they didn't get too technical with tasks such as covering offensive and defensive systems.

"We did a little bit of defensive zone work just to improve on that, but most of it was just more skill work," Pavely said. "On paper, we're probably the better team. Hopefully our skill level and work ethic will get us through the weekend with a couple of victories."

The two games over the weekend, according to the head coach, will be dictated by the Wildcats' ability to establish an all-encompassing presence early on.

"Really set the tempo, the pace, and everything that we want to do, just see if they can match us, " he said. "We don't want to wait and see how they play or anything - we just have to go out and play our game. If we do that, I think we should have success."

Last season, the Diamond Energy Wildcats finished in fifth place (10-10-1-7), while Weyburn ended the year in the eighth and final spot in the standings (0-28-0-0).

The Wildcats and Goldwings open the season tonight with puck drop at 7:30 p.m., with the second game tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
