The Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires suffered a 6-2 loss Sunday night to the Notre Dame Hounds at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.

The Legionnaires and Hounds were neck-and-neck on the scoreboard through the first period on a Mason Strutt goal for Swift Current, and Quinn Schmiemann for Notre Dame.

Legionnaires forward Reed Jacobson scored the team's second goal to open the second period for a 2-1 lead, but a stretch of just over nine minutes nearing the end of the middle frame saw four Hounds shots get past netminder Steven Duchscher for a 5-2 Notre Dame lead. Two of those were off the stick of Schmiemann, for a hat-trick on the night.

"We probably played really good for about 51 minutes. We had nine minutes there where we didn't make some hard plays with the puck and they capitalized on it," said Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen. "That was probably one of the differences - the other big difference was our power-play couldn't get going tonight. We had lots of opportunities - the 5-on-3 for two minutes. We don't capitalize at a point when it's 2-2 and we can get ahead."

That two-man advantage for Swift lasted 1:57 seconds, and once killed off by the Hounds, noticeably sparked momentum for the red-and-white side.

"They're a good team, and you're going to have momentum swings like that," Evjen said. "I didn't find anything too wrong with our game except for those nine minutes where we just turned some pucks over."

Swift surrendered a power-play goal with 12 seconds left in the game for the 6-2 final on a night where the score didn't seem to dictate the evenly-matched play.

Duchscher's night ended stopping 25 of 31 shots, while Jaden Wake, Ty Muench, Rhett Stevenson, and Dylan Hull found the stat sheet with single assists. The Legionnaires tallied 22 shots in the game.

Swift Current now has five days until their next pair of league games, plenty of time to look at some things in practice.

"Well, we'll go back and continue to work on things - the basics, put some time into our power-play, that's for sure. Repetition is such an important piece of hockey, and that's what we're going to need to do," said Evjen.

The fifth-place Legionnaires (11-8-0-2) will be out on the road visiting the two northern-most teams in the SMAAAHL this weekend. They're up against the Tisdale Trojans (15-2-1-2) on Saturday afternoon - a team that's tied atop the league standings. Continuing a weekend against some of the league's top teams, Swift then travels to Prince Albert for a Sunday afternoon contest against the Mintos (13-3-2-0), who sit in fourth.
