A 6-2 win for the Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires in their season opener over the Saskatoon Blazers.

Forward Jacob Piller opened the scoring on the power-play just 2:07 into the game. Hunter Lamb and Owen Ozar assisted on the goal.

The Blazers evened up the scoring with 2:23 left in the first frame on an unassisted goal from Michael Spafford.

The tide turned heavily in the Legionnaires' favour in the second period, after another power-play goal 2:07 in, this time by Mason Strutt - however, the momentum shift didn't come from the offense.

A pair of tripping and hooking penalties 41 seconds apart for Swift Current left them having to kill off on a 5-on-3 for 1:19. The Legionnaires fended off the Blazers' power-play attack, holding the lead at 2-1.

"We did a really good job defending that," said Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen. "That really turned the momentum of the game around - we played with some good confidence and just stretched out the lead."

The Legionnaires did, in fact, add on to the lead with goals by Owen Ozar and Piller once again in the final 1:09 of the period.

The third period was scoreless for the first eight minutes before an Ethan Ironside goal for Saskatoon cut the Legionnaires' lead to 4-2.

That was as close as the Blazers would get, as Ty Muench put Swift back up by three before Piller polished off a hat-trick with 3:27 left for the game's final goal.

Nine Legionnaires recorded points in the season opener, with five finding the stat sheet multiple times.

Piller led the way with his hat-trick - his three-point night was joined by Owen Ozar (1 G, 2A), and Lucas Ochitwa (3A). Mason Strutt (1 G, 1A) and Hunter Lamb (2A) rounded out the multi-point games for Swift Current.

Goalie Cody Leveque got the win in his first appearance of the season, stopping 26 Blazers' shots.

Despite the strong scoring performance, the Legionnaires' head coach says there's still lots to work on and improve ahead of their next game.

"We're not quite on track in face-offs, and our neutral zone play has to get a little better," Evjen said. "Being this early in the season, we still have to improve the execution as well."

Swift Current hosts the Moose Jaw Generals Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Fairview West.
