The Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires made relatively light work of the visiting Yorkton Maulers in a two-game set at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.

In the opener of the weekend set, the Legionnaires won 6-1 on Sunday.

Swift Current led 2-1 after the first, and 5-1 after the second against the lowly Maulers.

"I really liked last night's game. I thought we had a steady pace throughout our game," said head coach Darren Evjen. "We did a lot of good things moving the puck, and our defending was good."

Jacob Herman was barely tested in net, stopping 16 of 17 shots.

Then on the holiday Monday, Swift Current overcame a bit of a tough start to take a 6-3 W.

The Maulers leapt out to a 3-1 lead after the first period.

"Today, I thought we kind of stubbed our toe in the first ten minutes taking penalties, we didn't penalty-kill very well, and they got the lead," Evjen noted.

However, the Legionnaires didn't let that deficit last long, ripping home a quintet of second-period goals for the 6-3 lead after 40 minutes of play.

"You've got to have a little bit of dog in you and fight back - I thought our guys did that today," Evjen explained. "They stuck with it, and they made some changes to make sure we played a good, sound game the second and third to get the win."

Ethan Hein settled in to make 20 saves on 23 shots.

Meanwhile, a pair of hometown forwards heavily aided the Legionnaires offensive attack over the weekend sweep.

Riley Dekowny (4 G, 3 A) and Reed Jacobson (3 G, 4 A) piled on the stat sheet.

"Me, Reed, and Strutty created a lot this weekend - just got pucks to the net, and they were laying there," said Dekowny. "Cleaned up a lot of garbage in front of the net, and just went in."

Mason Strutt chipped in with a goal and four assists.

Elsewhere, Hendrik DeKlerk had five assists, and Chase Gallant had a trio, while solo goals came from Boston Bird, Rhett Evjen, Christian Albertson, and Maguire Scheidt.

Swift Current combined to go a torrid 6-for-12 on the power play, while pumping 109 shots on the Yorkton net Sunday and Monday.

"The biggest thing for us we've talked about the last couple of weeks is being direct," said Evjen on their game plan while on the man-advantage.

"Get the puck around the net, and get bodies to the net. I think we've been doing that a lot better of late. We've just got to make sure we have that mentality. As long as we're moving the pucks and getting them to the net, things have been successful."

Monday's win was the Legionnaires last home game of the regular season, and also their fourth-straight victory.

"We got our confidence back, we went on a slide for a little bit, but we got back to work right away," Dekowny explained. "We knew what had to happen, guys put in a lot of work, and we're sitting fighting for fourth, so it's good."

Swift Current (26-13-1-1) is now in a tie for fourth in the SMAAAHL standings with the Notre Dame Hounds (25-12-2-2), as both teams have just three games remaining.

"We've got to get home ice advantage, so we don't have to go play in the opponent's rink," said Dekowny on the first-round matchup with the Hounds, that's already solidified.

"We've just got to play our game. Any time we play our game, we're hard to beat."

The Legionnaires play their third game in three nights tonight, as they're on the road in Saskatoon taking on the Blazers in a rescheduled contest from February 3.

Puck drop against the third-place Saskatoon Blazers is 7:15 p.m. from Rod Hamm Memorial Arena in the Bridge City.
