Kyle MacDonald arrived in Swift Current around 2:00pm Monday afternoon and by roughly 8:30pm that night he had already hit two home-runs for the Swift Current 57's.

"I wasn't sure I was going to play since I hadn't played in a few weeks, but it was good to come out and start out hot," MacDonald said.

Making his 2017 57's debut, the Mississauga, Ontario native hit home-runs in each of his first two at-bats propelling Swift Current to a 10-1 win over the Yorkton Cardinals in front of 653 fans at Mitchell Field.

"I just wanted to get up there and get my swings in," MacDonald said following the victory. "I didn't want to sit around and see stuff. I got a pitch elevated in the zone and I was able to do some damage with it. That was my approach all day, get pitches I could handle and not miss them."

After his first plate appearance was cut short when Blake Adams was picked-off trying to steal third base with two-out, MacDonald came up to the plate to start the top of the 2nd inning and instantly made his presence felt.

Coming off of a huge year at Crowder College which saw him hit for a .353 avg. and 15 home-runs in 68 games, MacDonald stayed hot, hammering the first pitch he saw into the right field netting.

The 57's dug-out and the entire Mitchell Field crowd erupted as the ball left the bat of the left-handed hitting first baseman, but little did they know, the fireworks were just getting started.

Four pitches later Ben Andrews drove a triple to centre field and later scored on a Mason Brown sacrifice fly extending Swift Current's lead to 2-0 after two complete innings.

In the top of the 3rd, Blake Adams knocked in his team-leading 19th RBI with a single, which set the stage for MacDonald.

In a 1-2 count, the lefty connected on a hanging slider crushing the ball to right-centre field increasing Swift Current's advantage to 5-0.

""It's nice being able to come out here and help the team right away," MacDonald said. "It is always a good feeling and helps welcome you to the team a little more."

"Hopefully they don’t expect that every game cause it can only go down from here, I guess," he added with a laugh.

Swift Current continued to pile on the runs in the middle innings.

After MacDonald reached base on catcher's interference, back-to-back two-out doubles by Andrews and Grant Van Scoy put the 57's up 7-0.

In the top of the 6th inning the Cardinals were finally able to reach Swift Current starting pitcher Fernando Pena for a run, but the 57's quickly responded.

With a run in and men on second and third, MacDonald continued his memorable season debut with a two-RBI single putting the 57's up 10-1.

Swift Current Head Coach Joe Carnahan said after the game there was no hesitation putting MacDonald in the line-up despite only being in the city for a few hours.

"You just let him play," he said. "A guy like that, he put up some good numbers at a darn-good school and just signed a scholarship to go to a Division I school next year, he is coming here ready to play and there was no doubt putting him in that spot."

Hitting fourth in the line-up, MacDonald finished the night three for four with five RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base.

Perhaps lost in the shuffle of his performance was how well Pena pitched for Swift Current, turning in what was easily his best start of the season.

Entering the game with a 9.82 ERA after his first two starts, Pena went six innings, giving up just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six.

"We needed him to have that (performance) and he needed to have that," Carnahan said of his starter. "He was able to throw all three pitches for strikes. He was down in the zone for the most part and able to mix in his change-up and slider to keep them off balance."

Trey Taylor, Ernesto Romero and Layne Downing each came in and pitched a scoreless inning to wrap-up the victory.

While MacDonald made an instant first impression on his new teammates and reminded his returning ones what he is capable of, he says the feeling is mutual.

"I love them," MacDonald said when speaking about his teammates. "Everybody seems good and the team seems like a good group of guys, so hopefully we can make a run at another championship."

The 57's (10-3) will have Tuesday off before trying to extend their winning streak to six straight games on Wednesday in Yorkton.
