Brennan Rumancik reached the top of the Saskatchewan Zone PGA mountain on Tuesday.

For the first time in his career, the Assistant Golf Professional at the Elmwood Golf & Country Club claimed the 2017 Saskatchewan Zone PGA Championship.

"It's definitely a little bit overwhelming to finally win that golf tournament," Rumancik said. "I'm just really excited and still had to wake-up and pinch myself this morning because I couldn't quite believe it. It's nice to finally take that one down and I'm definitely happy to be the champ."

Competing at the Legends Golf Club & Range in Warman, Rumancik finished the two-day event with a +1 (145).

The golf course itself was one that Rumancik was very comfortable with.

"The Legends was actually the course where I won my very first golf tournament at," he said. "I had a really good vibe going into the tournament. I was really excited and looking forward to it. I had it circled on my calendar, it was the one I was looking forward to all year."

During Monday's opening round, wind gusts were reaching up to 75 km/h making for less than favourable conditions. Fortunately for Rumancik, he was able to find his way into the clubhouse with a +4 (76), putting him tied for third place and two shots off the lead.

"I just kept telling myself that you can't win the tournament on day one, but you can lose it," he said. "I got off to a really bad start on the back-nine of day-one. I just kept saying to myself that if I could still get into the clubhouse around three, four or even five over par, I was still going to be only a few shots back going into the second day where the conditions were going to be much nicer."

After shooting two-over through the first three holes on Tuesday, Rumancik said he began to generate momentum on hole 6.

"I rolled in about a 30-foot birdie putt and that got things started," he said. "I made five birdies after that and finished with no bogeys. I was really happy with how played the back-nine, I played it bogey-free. That made it a little bit easier coming up hole 18 with a three-shot lead."

Thanks to the live scoring feature that was being used at the Legends, Rumancik was able to see what the leaderboard looked like at all times, allowing him to focus on just making a few pars to close out the championship.

Following the win, the Elmwood member said he was completely focused on not allowing the opportunity to slip through his grasp.

"I've come so close to winning this tournament in previous years and on the drive home you think about some of the holes that cost you the tournament and what you can do differently," he said. "I think that is what I really dug deep on (Tuesday). On the back-nine, I really dug deep on a couple holes and made some really good up-and-downs for pars, and that really kind-of solidified the victory."

Also competing at the event, Head Golf Professional at Elmwood, Jeff Chambers finished the tournament tied for 14th.
