The Swift Current Comprehensive High School handed out their athletic awards over the lunch hour yesterday in the final look back at the 2017-18 high school athletic season.

It was a successful season by Swift Current athletics at the high school level.

Six athletes/teams claimed provincial titles over the course of the 2017-17 season:

  • Colts volleyball won the SHSAA 5A Boys Provincial Volleyball championship
  • Ardens wrestler Aleah Nickel claimed provincial gold in the 60 kg division at the SHSAA Provincial Wrestling Championship
  • SCCHS took the 4A Team Title at the SHSAA Provincial Track and Field Championship
  • Scott Joseph won Provincial Gold in Junior Boys Triple Jump and 100m
  • Rhett Vavra claimed the Midget Boys aggregate points title and Triple Jump Gold
  • Tyson Coward clinched the Gold medal in Midget Boys Long Jump

Swift Current Comp Colts and Ardens teams and athletes' accomplishments were celebrated, as well as the core values at the forefront of SCCHS.

The Fall, Winter, and Spring sports all handed out their team's TED awards, which encompass Teamwork, Effort, and Dedication.

As well, All-Academic awards were given to a combined 19 athletes.

Seven Colts and 12 Ardens athletes met the criteria of needing a 90 percent average.

That led to the major individual awards of the afternoon.

The Colts Leadership award was given to Grade 12 athlete Emmett Guider (below, left), while the Ardens Leadership award was given to fellow graduating athlete Kennedy Choo-Foo (below, right).

The Colts Outstanding Graduating Athlete award was presented to Braedon Friesen (below, left). The towering 6-foot-6 athlete played Colts basketball, volleyball, and track and field.

The Outstanding Graduating Ardens Athlete award was earned by Ali Vance (below, right). Vance played point guard for the Ardens basketball team, and was an integral part of a dynastic Ardens soccer team.

Three of four South West Athletic Conference awards were claimed by those in the SCCHS athletic program this season.

Badminton coach Gerry Dempsey was name the SWAC Outstanding Male Coach, Megan Jackson was named the SWAC Outstanding Official, and Adam Jackson was gifted the SWAC Service Award for his multi-sport dedication.

Principal and multi-sport coach Scott Mayall (below) was also recognized as he retires at the end of the school year.
