The sixth-annual Doug Armstrong Memorial Invitational Tournament tips off this afternoon at the Swift Current Comp High School.

The Senior Colts-hosted basketball tournament is named after the former coach and teacher who passed away in mid-August, 2012 after his battle with cancer.

"He passed away in pretty much his last year of teaching (before retirement)," said Colts' head coach, and SCCHS Principal, Scott Mayall of the beloved teacher. "He coached lots with the senior boys - he was heavily involved for many, many years. So, we thought this would be a great way to honour him."

The Doug Armstrong Memorial Invitational Tournament is the second home tournament of the season for the Senior Colts, having nabbed a gold the first time around at a six-team tourney on January 19-20.

"In that tournament we limited our turnovers a little bit, and that's kind of been our Achilles heel this year, so hopefully that continues," Mayall noted. "Being our home gym, I'm hoping that we shoot well because they're the hoops we shoot on all the time, so we should shoot better than maybe we do in other schools."

The six-team tournament this weekend will see the Humboldt Mohawks, the Weyburn Eagles, Estevan Elecs, Warman Wolverines, and North Battleford's John Paul II Crusaders battle at SCCHS.

The Sr Colts and Humboldt Mohawks open the tournament with a late-afternoon game in front of the home crowd at the Comp.

"I think Humboldt is probably in a little bit of a rebuilding phase, so I'm expecting that we will hopefully beat them, and then get a crack at a couple other teams on Saturday," Mayall said.

Tip-off between the high-flying Colts and Mohawks is 4 p.m.
