Looking to earn the right to represent Saskatchewan at Nationals, plenty of southwest talents are in the mix after day one at the Saskatchewan Junior Provincial Golf Championships at the Chinook Golf Club in Swift Current.

With both the 67th annual Junior Girl's event and the 91st annual Junior Boy's event taking place at the Chinook Golf Club, a total of six local athletes are competing.

Shaunavon's Hannah MacNeil is the lone female competitor from the southwest and finds herself tied for 3rd.

MacNeil shot an opening round 12-over 84, which puts her just three shots off the lead, currently held by Melville's Chloe Sies.

She tallied one birdie in the round, three bogeys and five double-bogeys.

On the boy's side, Elmwood's Griffin Wilson is tied for 7th after day one.

Wilson used birdies on holes 4 and 6 en route to a 3-over 75, seven shots back of Saskatoon's Andrew Campbell for top-spot.

Eastend's Kirk Humphrey finished the day shooting a 7-over 79.

The Elmwood member is tied for 18th after day one.

Playing on his home course, Swift Current's Ethan Fizell was hampered by a triple-bogey on 2 and a double-bogey on 7 as he wrapped-up his opening round with an 11-over 83.

Rounding out the southwest golfers, Maple Creek's Ruben Cooper also hit an 11-over 83.

Cooper hit a pair of birdies in the round, but suffered a quintuple-bogey on 9.

Weather permitting, round two of both provincials will get underway on Tuesday before wrapping-up with round three on Wednesday.

The top four boys and top four girls golfers will represent Saskatchewan at Nationals.
