Swift Current Special Olympics swimmers Tyler Piercy-Servant and Jenae Ruetz continue to represent the city and the province at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Swift Current's Jackie Powell, assistant coach with Team Sask's Special Olympics Swimming team, shares the advice she has given to Tyler and Jenae throughout the meet to help maximize their experience.

"For the most part, that's just another meet. Yes, we're swimming in a much bigger facility than we're used to and definitely we've never swam in from of a crowd like this before, so it's important for them to swim their race and enjoy the atmosphere."

She says both swimmers have been competing well so far, with Tyler notably setting new personal bests in several races.

"This is Tyler's very first experience at this level. For both swimmers, my goal for them was to swim their best times - Tyler took 30 seconds off a personal best in one race, and 11 seconds in another. Jenae is swimming solid as well - unfortunately no personal bests yet, but still swimming very well," she said.

Having two Special Olympics swimmers at the Canada Summer Games is a first for Powell and Special Olympics Swift Current, after sending a single swimmer in 2013.

Being able to coach both Tyler and Jenae and see their swimming careers grow from day one to the national level was something the swimming coach struggled to fight back tears thinking about.

"I've had one swimmer before at the Summer Games, but to have two make it to this level... it's been amazing," she said. "It's awesome to see that the program in the province as well as Swift Current has grown so that we've got athletes that are able to compete at this level."

Both swimmers are vying for a spot in the final and a medal in their respective 50-metre backstroke races today.

And in the rest of today's summer games action for Swift Current athletes:

Henry Rempel and Braedon Friesen look to knock off top-seeded Quebec in Men's Volleyball.

Austin Shopa and Men's Wrestling look to remain undefeated in the team competition facing Nunavut and Alberta.

Aleah Nickel and Women's Wrestling look to do the same, sitting at 3-0 with matches against Nunavut and B.C.

And Tobi Ojo and Team Sask Men's Soccer go up against Prince Edward Island in a consolation semi-final.
