Ryley Lindgren scored with 58 seconds left in the third period as the Swift Current Broncos capped a night of celebrations with a 3-2 win over Saskatoon.

Tyler Steenbergen scored his 50th goal of the season to tie the game at 2 in the first period. He's the first player in the WHL to reach that mileestone this season.

“It was kind of like a weight lifted off my shoulders,” Steenbergen said. “I tried not to think about it too much during the game. Once I got that one I felt like I could just play a little bit. I'd like to thank my teammates for help they've done for me this year.”

Steenbergen is the first Bronco to score 50 goals in a season since Jeremy Williams in 2003-04.

“It's pretty cool,” Steenbergen said. “I didn't know it was that long. It's a pretty big honour to do it. Heading down the stretch here we don't care who is putting the puck in as long as it's going in.”

The win was Swift Current's seventh in their last eight games. They won both ends of a home-and-home against the Blades this weekend and seriously damaged Saskatoon's playoff hopes.

Swift Current's penalty kill has at times struggled this season but is improving. They held Saskatoon to 0 for 6 on the night and 1 for 10 over the weekend.

“I think we're trying to pay attention to details a little bit more,” said Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward. “We changed a few things on it. It's become more of a shot blocking, determination penalty kill where you have to just grit it out and really work hard for two minutes. If there was a really good bright spot tonight that was it. Probably the second bright spot was how Burman played.”

Taz Burman made 35 saves as he earned the win in both games on the weekend. Broncos starter Jordan Papirny didn't dress on either night as he was out sick. AP Baily Brkin served as the back-up.

Lindgren scored twice and had an assist for Swift Current. He has 25 points in 26 games since joining the Broncos from Lethbridge.

“I thought he was pretty straight forward for the most part,” Heward said. “That's the kind of player we thought we were getting when we made the trade. The thing that I like about him is he brings an edge to his game. He can throw the body around and get in your face. Tonight was his night. There's nights where you work hard and you don't get anything and there's nights where you work hard and get lots.”

The teams traded goals in the first period. Steenbergen's 50th came when the Blades led 2-1 and he was able to tie the game in front of nearly 2500 fans.

“When I scored it was the loudest I have heard it,” Steenbergen said. “That was awesome. It made me feel really good inside. We're going to want to keep doing that throughout the playoffs. Hopefully they will be on our backs and we will be using that to our advantage.”

Goal scoring didn't always come easy for the third-year Broncos forward. Steenbergen only scored twice in the first half of his sophomore season before finding his stride with 18 in the second half.

“I questioned myself a little bit,” Steenbergen said. “At the same time I knew I was getting those chances. (Former coach Mark Lamb) did a great job letting me know I'm getting those chances and eventually they will go in. I was just patient with it and it paid off. As soon as the confidence comes it feels like it keeps coming.”

Confidence was a part of his success. One of his coaches would also credit hard work and attitude.

“He's such a good kid,” Heward said. “I'm really happy for him. When I first came here and he first got drafted honestly I didn't know what to expect from him. I just thought this is going to be a really good WHL player. He's not a real big kid but he's in exceptional kid. He's a great kid and the guys love him. He's had a great year. The kinds of things he's done off the ice have paid off for him. We've worked for two straight years on his shot from the slot. Thousands of pucks paid off for him. Couldn't happen to a nicer kid.”

The win moved the Broncos to within six points of Moose Jaw for second place in the WHL East Division with only four games left to play.

Saskatoon dropped a point behind Calgary for the final playoff spot and they've only got three games left in their season.

Swift Current continues what has been a very busy schedule lately on the road in Brand on on Tuesday and Regina on Wednesday. The wrap up the WHL regular season with home-and-home against Moose Jaw next weekend. The two teams will meet in the first round of the playoffs.
