Tyler Steenbergen scored four times in back-to-back games as the Swift Current Broncos knocked off the Saskatoon Blades 6-2.

Steenbergen now has ten goals in his last three games as the Broncos moved to 4-0 on the season.

“I don't think I've seen that in my years of playing and coaching,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “It's pretty impressive. He's got a hot stick right now so hopefully it stays hot.”

Steenbergen scored 51 goals last season and has seemingly taken that to another level this fall with linemates Glenn Gawdin and Aleksi Heponiemi.

“These goals aren't happening by luck,” Smith said. “He's getting into the right spots, he's got good linemates who are finding him, he's got a quick release that he's worked on... everything that he has done has been through hard work. He didn't start off this way. He found his way in the league, grew as a player, grew a a person, realized what he needed to do to get better and he works on the little things.”

It didn't come easy for Steenbergen who only scored twice in the first half of his 17-year-old season before hitting the 20-goal mark in the second half and turning into an elite sniper at 18.

“It's a work in progress,” Smith said. “He still works on a lot of things even after a big year last year and getting drafted. He's a hard working kids and it rubs off on the others. Hopefully the other guys see that when he was 17 he wasn't scoring four goals a game. It took him a little while to find his way and hopefully our guys are learning from that.”

Steenbergen came into Fridays' game as the reigning WHL and CHL Player of the Week having scored six times and adding three assists in two games last week. After scoring four times in Brandon last Saturday he picked up right where he left off against the Blades with a second period natural hat trick.

Heponiemi, Gawdin and Steenbergen combined for 11 points in the game and have a combined 40 points in 4 games.

“They're feeling it,” Smith said. “Obviously they have a lot of confidence. I think they surprise teams with their speed. Glenn is a very fast skater and a lot of guys don't give him as much credit for that. Heponiemi is very quick and everybody knows Steenbergen is. Their speed alone is creating opportunities and they're getting to loose pucks. Once they have possession they feed off each other. They get the holes and when most players we want them to shoot, they don't shoot they wait for the opening, make the pass and it's in the back of the net.”

Gawdin opened the scoring by deflected in an Artyom Minulin point shot on the power play. The Broncos then quickly got a two goal cushion on a nice quick rush through the neutral zone set up by Colby Sissons and Logan Barlage to Kaden Elder. The 19-year-old's backhand beat rookie goalie Joel Gryzbowski for his second of the season.

It wasn't just a three man show.

“We wanted a complete team effort and I thought we got it,” Smith said. “I thought we had a real good neutral zone. Our wingers did a great job on the boards chipping pucks out creating 2 on 1s and relieving the pressure. Our D kept it simple for most of the game. They moved it up, they moved it with purpose and straight forward hockey is hard to beat.”

Steenbergen took over the game in the second period with his natural hat trick and added a fourth in the third. The Broncos kept their top line off the ice for all but a few shifts once they got up 5-0.

It was another strong game for a veteran Broncos blue line that has helped them to four straight wins on the road to start the season.

“We're benefiting especially on the road when we're not always getting our match-ups,” Smith said. “The experience these guys have gained last year in particular with a good strong regular season and two strong seven game series... anything they're seeing right now they've dealt with.”

Logan Flodell made 19 saves to earn his third straight win as a Bronco and his first back in Saskatoon since the Blades dealt him to Swift Current.

The Broncos went 1 for 5 on the power play and held the Blades to 0 for 2. Swift Current didn't play their top line on any of their three third period attempts on the man advantage.

Kootenay visits the Innovation Credit Union iPlex on Saturday night in Swift Current's home opener.

“We're looking forward to (it),” Smith noted. “We're excited to show the people of Swift Current how we've been going about our business... and continue just playing the right way. The most important thing is we just get out there and get a win.”

There is a pre-game party from 4:30-6:00pm in the auditorium.

The Broncos hit 1661 season tickets as of Friday which is their best total in recent history.

You can hear Saturday's game on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 6:30pm.
