Tyler Steenbergen struck four times as the Swift Current Broncos top line continued a dominant start in a 7-2 win over Brandon.

Steenbergen, Glenn Gawdin and Aleksi Heponiemi have now combined for 29 points in the first three games of the season.

Swift Current got off to a hot start with five goals in the first period.

“We certainly wanted to get the jump on them they played last night,” said Broncos Coach/Director of Player Personnel Manny Viveiros. “We wanted to come out and try to use our speed against them early in the game. It seemed like everything we threw at them in the first period went in. It was not the fault of their goaltender we scored some pretty nice goals in that first period.”

It was the culmination of a very impressive week for Steenbergen who scored six times and had nine points in two games.

“It's quite impressive to watch,” Viveiros said. “Everything that he has done is not by luck it's by hard work. He's just continued where he left off last year and it's nice to watch.”

The Broncos started strong and got some needed secondary scoring to kick things off. Colby Sissons finished a give-and-go with Arthur Miller by centering a puck off a Brandon stick and in.

Kaden Elder then put home the rebound of a Sahvan Khaira shot and Swift Current had a 2-0 edge before the first line ever got in on the act.

“For us to have success we need the secondary scoring,” Viveiros said. “We had some guys contribute tonight and we had some other guys have some good looks too. You can't just have one line do it and I'm happy everyone contributed tonight.”

Steenbergen, Gawdin and Heponiemi then took over scoring the next five goals and putting Brandon away.

Brandon did challenge Swift Current midway through the second period with two quick goals including a 5 on 3 goal to cut the lead to 5-2. The Broncos then killed off the rest of that penalty and Steenbergen notched his hat trick goal to snuff out the Wheat Kings.

“The game is about momentum,” Viveiros said. “It junior hockey it can go pretty quick... after that penalty kill we came back with a good push-back shift to get a big goal. After that they were pretty deflated.”

Steenbergen then added his fourth goal in the third period as the Broncos went 3 for 6 on the power play.

Miller and Khaira each had two assists in the game. It was a big game for Miller after he sat out the first two of the season. He and Conner Chaulk appear to be battling for the final overage slot on the club.

“He played well,” Viveiros said. “He brought a lot of energy and physicality too. We're very happy with how he played.”

Logan Flodell made 31 saves to earn his second win since joining the Broncos from Saskatoon.

Brandon pulled Logan Thompson after he allowed 5 goals on 11 shots.

Noah King played his first game of the season for the Broncos.

Swift Current takes a 3-0 record into Saskatoon next Friday. Their home opener is slated for next Saturday against Kootenay.
