The Swift Current 57's were honoured at city council Monday, as their WMBL Championship win in August keeps the Harry Hallis Memorial Trophy in town for a second year.

Baseball's done at Mitchell Field until next season, but coming up is the Earl Monkman Memorial Boxing Card Fall Brawl on September 23.

57's Manager Joe Carnahan said he looking forward to keeping the action going at the diamond.

"It's always nice to be able to team up with other members of the community and also just be able to keep doing things throughout the year - not being just a two-and-a-half-month program, but to be able to help out the community and to be in the community as much as we can throughout the entire year."

The netting of the backstop will be taken out, and a boxing ring will be set up at home plate for what is expected to be approximately 10 bouts of amateur boxing.

The 57's are teaming up with Vic-Tory Boxing out of Swift Current to put on the event.

"Earl (Monkman) was an avid supporter in honour of his legacy as a committed volunteer," said 57's President Mike Mutlow. "We were excited to partner with the Boxing Club to host this great event at Mitchell Field in the City of Swift Current."

The last big event was a nine-inning bout that saw the 57's shutout Edmonton 4-0 on August 17 for their second-straight championship. A crowd of 1,189 was on hand, and during the council delegation on Monday, Mutlow recalled sitting down on the field with a "cold pop" in his hand and crying for joy because of the team's success and the community getting behind them.

For Carnahan it's a special moment too, but not one he sit back and enjoy for too long, as the recruitment process lasts year round.

"Just right now recruiting and getting ready for next year. Contact with a lot of players, even during our season last year, and continue to do that and try and build the roster to be competitive again next season."

As was the case in 2017, Carnahan expects the 2018 version of the 57's to be a mix of returnees and new players.
