One of the newest Swift Current Broncos players in the lineup is already making his presence felt through the first two games of his stint in southwest Sask.

Forward Andrew Fyten was one of the final pieces added to the equation before last Wednesday's WHL Trade Deadline, after the 19-year-old was acquired from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for the rights to 17-year-old defenceman Ethan Martini and a conditional third-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Sundre, Alberta product appears to be loving life in Swift alongside fellow former Hitmen forwards Beck Malenstyn and Matteo Gennaro, who were traded from Calgary in late-November.

"I was really excited once I heard it was Swift that I was going to - we have a great opportunity here this year so I'm really excited," said Fyten of his initial reaction. "They (Malenstyn and Gennaro) helped me a little bit, showed me the way around Swift and stuff to get me settled in. It for sure helps having someone in the room that is a familiar face."

Fyten brings added grit and depth to the Broncos lineup, being able to contribute at both ends of the ice.

"I play a hard game - a very responsible game, I think I'll be big for their PK, and be able to provide some depth in the offense and be able to play against top lines," Fyten said, expanding more on his ability to thrive when down a man on the penalty-kill unit.

"Ever since my rookie season I've been a penalty-killer in Calgary before I came here. We usually ran four forwards on the penalty kill and I was one of them. We had a very good PK I thought, so I'm looking forward to helping them get their numbers up here."

Perhaps the biggest part of his game is that aspect of grit, according to the new Bronco.

"I think it's huge for me - I want to make sure that other players don't want to be on the ice against me," the forward added. "I want to make them scared to go in the corners with me and make some space for my linemates and get the puck to the net."

That style of play has already been palpable on the ice with his new team, as Fyten hustled his way to a two-assist night this past Saturday in a 9-1 win at home over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

In fact, Fyten is in the middle of his best offensive season in the WHL, now with 18 points in 42 games. His previous season high was 12 in 63 games last season.

"My first two seasons I wasn't as offensive, but I think it's starting to come for me now. I'm getting a little bit more comfortable with the puck and confident to make plays, so I'm happy with that."

Fyten and the new-look Broncos are south of the border for a five-game U.S. road swing. They kick off that trip tonight in Kennewick, Washington against the Tri-City Americans - a fun match up for Fyten, Gennaro, and Malenstyn as they take on former Hitmen teammate Jake Bean. The star defenceman was also moved before the deadline in a massive deal.
