Make it four straight wins for the Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats, who are surging in 2019.

After topping the Melville Prairie Fire 3-2 on Saturday, the Wildcats came back with Sunday victory with that same final score, though improvements were made in their game in the weekend finale.

"I thought we played better in terms of playing in the offensive zone cycling the puck," said head coach Terry Pavely. "We didn't give up a ton of good scoring chances today. The biggest thing was our compete was good, and we got contributions from everybody in a variety of different ways."

Sara Kendall put the Wildcats up early in the game, taking a pass from Taylor Lind, and scoring the game's first goal just 51 seconds in on the first shift of the game.

Then, with under three minutes to go in the first, Swift Current jumped ahead by two goals, as Lind scored on the power play. Carissa Hogan recorded the primary assist, with Madison Garrett adding the secondary helper.

Melville was the lone team to score in the second frame, scoring with four minutes left on the man-advantage to cut the Wildcats' lead to one through 40 minutes.

Swift Current responded, though midway through the third period, with a second power play goal, this time off the stick of Hogan, with assists from Lind and Baylee Kirwan.

The Prairie Fire tried to make it interesting late, though their second came with 2:46 remaining in the game, failing to pull their goalie late with tenacious offensive zone pressure by the Wildcats.

"I thought just all in all we had a pretty good effort from our lineup," said Pavely on the pair of gritty, playoff-style wins. "I liked the fact that we were in a close game at the end for two days in a row, and we found a way to come out on top."

"That's what we need is to find a way to win those close games because we know, come playoff time, we're going to be in some tough one-goal games, and you have to learn how to win those, and learn that you can hold another team off. That was a real positive this weekend."

Swift Current executed the weekend sweep of Melville, going 2-for-5 on the man-advantage - a special teams effort that pleased their head coach:

With the Wildcats out-shooting the Prairie Fire 36-23, goalie Amaya Giraudier turned aside 21 of Melville's shots. Giraudier's play, to start 2019 especially, is that of a high-level goaltender, as Pavely noted:

Now at 10-9-0-1 and in fourth in the league standings, Swift Current gets a rematch with the Battlefords Sharks at home this weekend.

Coming off a pair of wins over Battlefords to start 2019 (5-2, 10-1), Pavely says his team will be ready to take on a hungry Sharks squad.

The Wildcats host the Sharks in Gull Lake on Saturday, as part of Hockey Day in Saskatchewan. Puck drop is 1 p.m. in that game, before hosting the rematch back at Fairview West on Sunday.
