On Saturday the Legion in Swift Current hosted a 40's theme party to wrap up the Remembrance Day ceremonies.

The event featured pipe drums from the Green Berets and a performance from Rosie and the Riveters.

Andy Keys, a British Armed Forces veteran and the organizer of the event, said he's always wanted to host it for the community.

"There is a number of reasons," he said. "I've always been asked by veterans and members of the community that the legion used to put on the event, and if I could bring it back. It's always been a passion of mine to try and bring it back."

Keys added that he got the idea for the 40s theme when he saw Rosie and the Riveters perform about a year ago.

The event also featured a silent auction and a draw for prizes donated by members and businesses of the community.

There was also a bid for a game-worn Remembrance Day Broncos jersey.

"I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to make the event bigger and better for next year, but I'm going to try," he said. "Once I've got my teeth into something I think I'm going to make it better.

Outside the legion, they had a B-17 ball turret, a Harley Davidson motorbike, a jeep, a Bren gun carrier, and a cenotaph that Andy Keys built on display.

Keys said they had a great response from the community.

"The attendance was just fantastic, and if anybody missed out, they missed out on a great night," Keys said. "It's a once a year thing, and all the proceeds go to the legion."

Keys added that the event wasn't just a 40s theme party but it was a chance for people to tell stories about veterans in their family.

"We need the people that know the stories to tell their stories," Keys said. "I've been astounded since I've been doing this of all the people telling me their grandfather's stories. "I want to encourage more people if they're out to tell their stories. Because it's the veterans, we need to listen to and know what happens.
