Children ages five to 14-years-old had their chance to show off their homemade Kub Kars this past weekend.

The Swift Current Scouts Annual Kub Kar Rally was held Saturday morning at the Swift Current Mall.

The event, which is gear towards the Cub Scouts (ages 8-10) allows them to build a car out of a kit with help from their families. The kit must weigh less than 142 grams.

Josh Straub was this year's selection for best made Kub Kar. The decision was made by three judges, who factored in craftsmanship, design and overall appeal. Rick Redekop, Treasure of the Swift Current Scouts says the rally is great for empowering kids to work and build something themselves.

"This event is great for getting everybody together to have a fun time and getting out in the public, we put it in the mall here just so people can come by and see what's happening, come appreciate the kid's dedication and work they've done with the group," Redekop said.

This annual tradition has been in Swift Current for more than 30 years. It is the biggest event of the year for the Scouts internationally.

"It's a little bit for raising funds, but basically every group does a Kub Kar Rally," added the Swift Current Scouts ten-year veteran. "It's a big deal, the kids always like it. It gets their creativity going when building the cars, designing and painting."

The cars ranged from simple and unique ideas to more complex designs that included a cannon on the back of a car, or a fire pit and tent representing Scouts.

"There are actually some really creative cars out there this year," he said. "Every year you see an increase in the creativeness going into the cars, which is great especially in today's day and age where a lot more kids are starting to sit in front of their iPads and TV's, so it's really good to see them get out and be creative."

Money raised at Saturday's event will help five scouts and two leaders attend the 13th Canadian Jamboree in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
