Over 340 people from across Canada and even the United States travelled to Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park to participate in the Beaver Flat 50.

The Beaver Flat 50 is an ultramarathon that is 50 kilometres long but features 20-kilometre, 10-kilometre, and five-kilometre run for those who don’t want to run the full 50 kilometres.

The marathon features a 2,300 metre gain over the 50 kilometres which adds up to almost 8,000 feet of total climb.

Warren Dudar, one of the organizers along with his brother Jeff Dudar, said runners from Saskatchewan, Alberta, and B.C. said it's tougher than some of the hard races in the mountains.

"We don't have a big mountain to run up," said Warren. "Instead we got the hill which you have to go up and down, and up and down, a million times instead of just going up one mountain and then running down the mountain, like some of the bigger races."

Jeff added that runners described it as relentless.

Warren and Jeff would often train at Saskatchewan Landing because of the hills as well as the scenery.

"The hills are pretty big for Saskatchewan, and we just spent more and more time out at the Landing and exploring the area, and we just found some beautiful spots and some beautiful trails and just kind of fell in love with how rugged and backcountry it is," Warren said. "One day the conversation kind of evolved to maybe we should try and put a run on and it's a good location. We wanted to start a race that was a really high-quality experience for runners - something that could measure up to some of the runs that we had been out to."

The brothers said that things went really well on Saturday, as the weather wasn't too warm for the runners. They said the Beaver Flat 50 is really starting to get a name for itself.

Warren said that this event is not just for the experienced runners, it's for anyone and everyone.

"We've had quite a few people that I talked to this year and last year that this was their first ultramarathon experience. They had never run a marathon over the 42-kilometre distance and for whatever reason maybe because it's local they decided that this was going to be their first race. We get a lot of people doing the five-kilometre race. They are kind of doing the couch to the five-kilometre program where they haven't really done a lot of running in their life, but they've heard of the Beaver Flat 50 and decided to train for it, and they come out, and it kicks their butt."

They added that the run would probably not get bigger than 500 runners and that next year they plan - though they are not 100-per-cent sure - to will expand the number of entries by 100 people.
