Yesterday Students Against Drunk Driving held their mocktail contest at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School, and judges ruled the Best Buddies mixed the top beverage for the second-straight year while the Gay-Straight Alliance had the top-ranked decorations.

The annual event was held during lunch time as a way to spur the idea that people don't need to drink to have fun.

Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault and City Councillors Ron Toles and Chris Martens were the judges, and the Best Buddies - a student group that works with fellow students with intellectual disabilities - put in serious work to net the top prize.

Heather Mitchell is one of four advisors with the Best Buddies and said they were working away the night before preparing their fruity, triple-layered concoction that had a strawberry on top for the judges.

"The layered drink was a challenge, but worked out perfect," she said of the slushy.

Martens liked seeing five different student groups come together and compete for a good cause.

"Really the whole point of all of it is a nice way to encourage people to make different decisions - instead of choosing to drink and drive, or drink, or whatever else it might be, having something to fall back on," he said. "It was a really neat little competition. It was cool to see, and really nice to see all the different groups having fun and getting creative with what they made."

Martens said the Best Buddies' mocktail - called 'Cold, Eh?' was a nice mix that stood out among a strong field to choose from.

"Everyone did a really good job and made a strong presentation with it all," he said. "It's good to see that every year it maintains its popularity, and more people come out to experience the different kind of drinks."

It wasn't just the judges who did the tasting, as students were also able to try out the refreshments. Though it was only the judges who got strawberries on top - an addition that worked in the Best Buddies' favour.
