The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority has initially issued approximately 60 cannabis permits in up to 60 eligible municipalities and First Nation communities with populations of at least 2500 people.

With both the southwest communities of Maple Creek and Swift Current going ahead to sell recreational cannabis when the time comes, the Town of Shaunavon is speaking up on why they were not chosen.

Shaunavon Mayor, Grant Greenslade, says "Whether or not you support cannabis, it will become legal this summer and dispensaries across Canada are gonna be allowed to become open. Our town should be allowed to have a cannabis retail store if we so chose. That's another discussion that Town Council must decide is whether or not we want a retail store in our community. If the community decides to have a dispensary, they should be allowed to have one, regardless of the size of the community."

Mayor Greenslade says that Shaunavon Town Council will be waiting for some provincial guidelines over the next few months and then will discuss whether a cannabis dispensary should be pushed for in Shaunavon.
