The City of Swift Current is submitting an application for grant funding from the Federal Government to help assist with the City's asset-management project and its costs.

City Council approved the application Monday night to apply for a maximum funding of $50,000 from Infrastructure Canada.

"The good news is we were able to apply for the funding to help us fund the project," Kathy Hopfner, general manager of corporate services with the City of Swift Current, said. "We're very hopeful and confident that we will be successful in getting the funding."

The project, which has been in the works for two years, entails compiling a list of all city assets including infrastructure and light and power.

"It (completing the asset management project) will allow us to continue to be able to apply for infrastructure grants and successful receive funding," Hopfner said. "So it will allow us to receive funding for things like the 2nd Avenue overpass."

Implementing this program will allow the City to maximize the lifespan on all assets while also trying to smooth the impact on finances.

"The city will benefit most significantly from the ability to make future decisions from an organization-wide perspective by ensuring the responsible and sustainable funding decisions integrate with citywide priorities," Hopfner said.

If the city is successful with their application for funds they will then be on the clock to complete quantifying the infrastructure gap and completing the asset-management project within 11 months.

Hopfner also added, "it won't be a problem to meet the deadline."

The plan for the project will cost somewhere in the neighbourhood of a couple hundred thousand dollars.
