The City of Swift Current is passed a new motion that will make it easier for them to manage their assets.

The policy was announced at city council on Tuesday, and Kathy Hopfner, general manager of corporate services with the City of Swift Current explained the policy.

"It establishes the principals of the framework for the provision of a sustainable systematic and coordinated approach to implementing asset management," she said. "This policy is the roadmap for how we are going to implement our asset management program."

Hopfner said it would help them better use and maximize the lifespan and service level of their assets.

"It will help us get the maximum use of our assets," she said. "To use an example, when it comes time for you to change the oil in your car, you change the oil in the car. If you don't change the oil in the car, the car is not going to last as long as it potentially could, that's in simple terms what asset management will help us to do."

Hopfner noted that the policy would cost the city some money.

"It will cost us a little bit of money to implement it. We had to purchase some software, and we've got some consultants on retainer that's going to help us implement the program."

Hopfner added that they would be able to make their money back from the around $900,000 gas tax the City receives.

"We have to have the policy into the province to continue receiving gas tax money funding by June 30th, 2018," she said. "So if we want to continue to receive gas tax and other grants we need to have our asset management policy in place."

Hopfner added that the decision to implement the asset management policy was an easy one.
