The City of Swift Current entered into a new transit contract Monday evening at city council that will provide service until December 31, 2018.

The service, which is provided by SaskAbilities, was renewed for 14 months at a total cost of $419,200 ($34,933 monthly) plus GST.

Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault said the City will see a savings in the new contract of five per cent.

"Where we're at on this year's contract will be a slight reduction to the one in the past," he said.

The addition of a second fixed line in September and the discontinuation of the shuttle service helped the cost of operation reduce.

Perrault added that the transit system is still in its infancy.

"Our transit that we have in Swift Current is an evolving concept and something that isn't even three years old yet," he said. "We will look to the future to see if we can amend or change these services to better meet the needs of our residents, that's something we will continue to work on."

Also stated within the contract is an option for two subsequent years with negotiations required for increases in operations and wages.
