An agreement was reached and signed at Monday's Swift Current City Council meeting for the construction of a clubhouse facility at Mitchell Field.

The facility will include home and away change rooms, a room for umpires, public washrooms, food and drink vendor space, office space, as well as a patio on the roof for fans.

Mike Mutlow, president of the Swift Current 57's says, not only is the clubhouse and amenities within the facility important for the fan and game experience, it's also a key addition to recruiting players.

"Now it's no questions asked, clubhouse is there," said Mutlow. "The guys have got a place to change, their stuff's secure, they can get out of the weather if needed. It just brings us right to the top level in the Western Canadian Baseball League."

Construction is expected to start as soon as possible, with the hope of the team being moved in for the 2019 summer season.

According to Monday's council agenda, in 2016 council approved $10,000 for design services, and in 2017 approved $500,000 toward the clubhouse project.

The City's commitment to construction is $300,000 while the 57's is $80,000 over 10 years. They've also been tasked with finding community partners to contribute to the project so the City's contributions can be offset.

Wallace Construction agreed to donate $40,175  of in-kind labour and materials and will cover any costs that go over budget. The construction cost provided by Wallace was $448,675, including PST.

Integrity Post Structers Ltd. will provide the building, under Wallace's direction, and have committed $10,000 of in-kind contributions.

Crutch's Plumbing and Heating Ltd. agreed to donate $18,500 of in-kind labour and materials at 10 per cent under cost.

The clubhouse naming rights are Wallace's for 10 years, while Crutch's has naming rights for the clubhouse's concession for five years.

There was an issue regarding construction though - Wallace said they had windows and exterior material stolen from a clubhouse package at the diamonds on Friday.
