This might be the coldest February on record in Swift Current history.

Up until Friday morning, the temperature hadn't risen above -20 C for 12 consecutive days (February 3 - February 14) pushing this month's average temperature to -24.5 C.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang said the last time Swift Current was hit with a longer consecutive day streak of -20 C temperatures or colder in February was back in 1936 when there were 15 days in a row.

"We aren't seeing as many overnight cold temperatures type of thing, cold records, like daily records (broke), but the length of the cold is starting to get significant," she said.

With the seven-day forecast calling for more cold weather, Lang believes Swift Current may have a chance at breaking the coldest February on record that averaged -26.6 C.

"But we still have half a month to go," she said. "If anybody is going to get warm it's going to be you guys in that southwest corner. You tend to get the benefit of the warmer air that a lot of us don't because you can get that chinook sneaking in there. Looking at the long-range forecast, nothing is showing any indication of any massive warmup, there is moderation, but no massive warmup coming."

The 30-year average temperature for Swift Current from 1981 to 2010 is -8.2 C, 16.3 C warmer than what 2019's February is averaging.

"Initially when the cold weather set in people were blah blah blah," she said. "Then they started getting in a routine and plugging the car in, and getting dressed up, and getting the kids dressed up. I think you do become acclimatized to it."

The coldest it's reached in February in terms of temperature in Swift Current was -36.5 C on February 7.
