Weather caused a bit of a delay, but it looks like construction on Chaplin Street in Swift Current is nearing completion.

Swift Current Manager of Engineering Jolene Peters said the last concrete pour should be done today, and the project should come in under the $300,000 allocated for it in the 2018 budget.

"With the rain we've received in the last week, it's delayed the project slightly," Peters said. "However the contractors are confident that we will see completion by the end of next week. The road will be closed periodically for the concrete and asphalt trucks to get in and out of the work zone. But for the majority of the remaining project, the road will be open to traffic."

A reduced speed limit is in effect on Chaplin entering the construction area

City administration started developing plans with stakeholders a couple years ago for the downtown masterplan, and this is the first part of that work.

"The masterplan's primary goal was to create a downtown that is fresh but is still true to its roots," Peters explained. "So it'll still have a historical feel. The revitalization will include new sidewalks, which are a combination of concrete and paving stone, there'll also be new black rod iron street furniture to enhance the appearance of the downtown core."
