A donation made by a Swift Current company will help provide a safety net against wildfire for a small community in southwest Saskatchewan.

The $10,000 contribution made to the Saskatchewan Landing Co-operative Ltd. by the Co-operators insurance company will allow the cottage settlement to finish installing a fire-suppression system around the development.

In 2015 the settlement was able to complete a quarter of the fire-suppression system before running out of money. Saskatchewan Landing Co-operative President Bob Tretiak said the park (which the residents pay fees to) wasn't going to finish the project for them.

Tretiak said the 2017 wildfires sparked concern for how vulnerable the park is, surrounded by so much grass.

"It's so critical right now," he said. "If the drought continues it's going to be a real issue here and we need some sort of protection."

The remainder of the project is pegged at $25,000 to $30,000, but with the donation, it will speed up the process.

"It advances the project by a year for us," Tretiak explained. "We're going to start it this spring and we're hoping to finish it by mid-summer, it depends on when the contractors are free. This (donation) will give us enough cash to get most of the project done upfront and then some of the other stuff can be done a bit later."

The $10,000 boost will allow the purchase of a filtration system so the sprinklers don't get clogged up with sand while also lessening the levy the Saskatchewan Landing Co-operative Ltd. places on its 50 cottages later this fall to $400 instead of $500.
