A successful fundraiser for the Southwest Youth Emergency Shelter last Friday at the Elmwood Golf & Country Club.

23 teams took to the links to support Dorie's House, helping raise approximately $7,000.

"It was awesome," Betty McDougall Executive Director for the Southwest Youth Emergency Shelter said. "For our first event, we were really excited about how many people came out and helped support Dorie's House."

The approximately $7,000 raised from the event will help the Southwest YES to pay for staffing costs at Dorie's House.

"At this point in time we don't have operating funding from the government," she said. "All of our fundraising goes to pay the staff, so we can provide the support for the young people who come here."

The first ever Dorie's House Charity Golf Tournament was supposed to take place in the fall of 2016, but as McDougall said it was postponed until this year due to "(bad weather)".

"We're really grateful to Sheldon Reinhart at Elmwood Golf & Country Club," McDougall added. "He came to us last fall and told us he wanted to help support Dorie's House and help raise some funds, so how about a golf tournament. He provided the venue for the golf tournament and then he was part of the organizing committee all the way through."

The date for next year's tournament has already been set, as the 2nd annual Dorie's House Charity Golf Tournament will return to Elmwood Golf & Country Club on Friday, May 11, 2018.
