The Town of Shaunavon lowered it's flags to half-mast this past Monday evening in memory of the 215 Indigenous children whose remains were found at a former Indian Residential School in Kamloops, British Columbia.

At this past Tuesday's Town Council meeting, council made a resolution to send a letter to our local MP, as well as to the Federal Government, strongly encouraging them to take action and request funding for forensic archaeology investigations and collaboration with Indigenous communities to occur on the grounds of every Indian Residential School, including those that operated without federal support.

Shaunavon Mayor, Kyle Bennett, said that the letter goes on to say that, as a country, we can do better.

"We must do better. We must honor and respect the lives of these children, and the families who never received answers, by giving them a proper resting place. Their voices, which would have carried knowledge, language, love and tradition, have now been erased."

Schools in Shaunavon also have their flags lowered to half-mast.
