Protecting Swift Current’s most vulnerable population was the goal of last Friday's seminar for seniors. The event helped show seniors popular scams and explorations they often fall victim too.

Michelle Sorensen, Program Coordinator at Saskatchewan Senior Mechanism. She says most of fraud begins with seniors feeling sorry for their scammers.

"Lots of them, they feel sorry for them, then our seniors will feel sorry, and these people befriend them," she said. "They'll start out by doing nice things for them, but they'll end up taking advantage of the seniors without them even realizing.

The session was attended by upwards of 50 Swift Current seniors. Sorensen says she hopes that by presenting, they become aware of what dangers are out there.

"Everybody knows that fraud and scams are a big problem in our society and we need to make sure people are aware. Seniors are the most affected by it," she said. ""I think it's just good to inform people, and especially let them know what kind of scams and frauds are out there. By us going through certain, different ones it gives them an eye opener, so they can be on guard and be alert."
