As STC stops rolling at the end of this month, a Saskatchewan man is hoping to help fill the void for free.

Dick Deryk put his 20-plus years of experience as a website designer to good use to do it. He launched the website SaskRideShare this month helping connect drivers with spare seats and riders in need for free.

He was inspired to create the website because of his own experience as a Saskatchewan Transport Company (STC) bus rider. He said he found the service very convenient, especially when he was going to Regina from his home in Yorkton for medical appointments or to use the airport. During his time as a rider, he noticed many of those using the service had no other way to get around the province. He says the majority were senior citizens.

Deryk admitted he has some concerns as to whether or not some of the less tech-savvy seniors who use STC will be able to navigate the page but options were limited.

"How else do you do it? I know lots of people who might have trouble filling out the form but we're hoping, that once word gets around, friends or neighbours or family members might help them and get their listing online," he said.

The website is not-for-profit but Deryk said they won't turn away a bit of assistance to help fund the website's maintenance. He said nobody will ever be charged to use their page but if users feel it is a worthwhile service.
