The Saskatchewan government confirmed Monday they are renewing funding for Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) in Saskatchewan.

The announcement was made as STARS is celebrating their fifth anniversary of saving lives in the province.

"It's prenominal (to get this funding)," said Andrea Robertson, President and CEO of STARS. "I think the reason we've been so successful, is because the community and big corporations, like our Crown corporations all recognize the importance of STARS."

Five Crown Corporations, including the Ministry of Health, SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SaskTel and Crown Investment Corporation are all involved in the renewed funding agreement, with each Crown contributing $2 million per year over the next five years to STARS.

"The support of everybody in this lovely province that we live in has been extraordinary," Robertson added. "I always feel overwhelmed every day whether I'm meeting a patient that we happen to fly or someone who's interested in what we do. It has been an absolute privilege to be working for STARS."

STARS which relies on approximately 50 percent of their funding from the government of Saskatchewan, with the remaining coming from donations.

"(This renewed investment) just continues the vital service that we currently provide," she said. "We still look to the community for 50 percent of our funding, so as I say it takes an entire village to keep STARS flying."

Since arriving in Saskatchewan in 2012, STARS has flown 4,000 missions to over 500 locations in the province.
