The spring runoff is wreaking havoc all over the southwest, and the Grassland National Park is no exception.

The park announced earlier this week that it had to close down two roads due to flooding.

Sherri Clifford, the manager of Resource Conservation for the Grassland National Park, said that as of noon Friday, all the roads remain closed.

"The water levels along eco-tour road that was previously closed, they've receeded, and that road is now open, but travel is not recommended as there is a very good possibility of finding yourself stuck," she said. " Water levels on the Frenchman river remains high. They is flooding by the bridges on the access road both to 70-mile bute and to the backcountry loop, so both of those remain closed to the public for the time being."

Clifford said that they don't have a timetable for when the roads will be reopened.

"It's really hard to say at this time," she said. "We are just going to continue to monitor the conditions, and we will update the advisory on our website. This happens every year for a few days, and I don't expect this year will be any exception. I'm sure we will be back to normal within a few days."

Clifford added that the flooding had caused minimal damage as some of the gravel roads have been washed out.

The ecotour road feeds off of Highway 18, and the 70-mile bute road feeds off of Highway 4 directly south of Swift Current.

Clifford recommends that visitors call their visitor centre (1-306-298-2257) while planning their trip to know how to get into the park.
