Following the announcement from Conservative MP David Anderson that he would not pursue re-election, one woman has stepped forward to announce that she plans to run for the position.

Megz Reynolds said that she and her husband have been considering a foray into politics for around a year, and jumped at the opportunity.

Reynolds said that her work in the agriculture industry qualifies her.

"I think as I've gotten more involved in ag policy and rural life policy, I've realized this is something I'm passionate about, and I'm passionate about seeing our rural communities and agriculture especially succeed and thrive. We need people in Ottawa who understand rural areas and understand agriculture, and I'd like to be that voice."

The operator of a family farm said issues such as trade, agriculture, and rural life were topics that she said she would bring to Parliament Hill.

Reynolds is the top representative for the RM of Lacadena to the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, and is also on the Board of Governors at the Great Plains College, as well as being a member of Crops and Transportation, Economics and Trade, and Young Agriculture Producers' Committees. She is also a volunteer firefighter.

She says this will prepare her for the leadership role.

"I think everything that I've done in life up until now has hopefully prepared me, and will help. Weather that has been putting in extremely long hours on the farm or performing under stress, but especially the policy files I've gotten involved in over the past year have opened my eyes and helped me be involved in some of the key issues that affect our riding."

Reynolds commented that she would differ from Anderson in that she brings some diversity to the table by being a mother of two.

"It's important to have diversity, and diversity isn't just about gender, it is not just about race, it's also about I think where you're at, at that stage in your life. I have huge respect for David, I think he's done an incredible job over the past 20 years that he's been in service, and our riding was extremely lucky to have him."

The federal election is on October 21, 2019.
