The Swift Current & District Drug Task Force held their 6th Annual Luncheon on Thursday afternoon.

The event which was held at Great Plains College, featured two guest speakers who shared past stories on how drugs affected their lives.

"It's important (to have this event) because we often hear about the negative things that are going on in the community," says Patti Dekowny, Chair for the Swift Current & District Drug Task Force. "I think it's really important to recognize people are making positive changes, there are young leaders in our community and I think really important to recognize some of the successes we've had."

One organization and six individuals received awards, including three youths at the luncheon.

"We really just want to highlight what they've done and to point out we appreciate what they're doing," she said. "They don't know they're being nominated for the awards, which surprises them when they receive them in the mail."

Dekowny noted that the task force will continue to work on their prevention pillar with established activities such as the sponsored family swim and Rand Teed presentation. They will also look to build on their other three pillars (treatment, harm reduction and community justice).
