A trio of upgrades are on the way for Swift Current's Lyric Theatre after a recent donation.

The upgrades include improving the sound and lighting and adding an extension to the stage.

It's slated to cost around $50,000 to complete the upgrades and on February 4 Bob Sonntag, the owner and president of S3 Enterprises, made a donation for that amount.

"I've been kind of a fan of the Lyric Theatre for a long time and everything that they've tried to do," he said. "I was approached that there was a need for some capital investment that they couldn't necessarily do on their own. That's the kind of thing we like to do at S3. We are looking for donation type projects that have a lasting life cycle."

Sonntag took a tour of the theatre earlier this week with the artistic director Gordon McCall and he said he's looking forward to continuing to contribute and seeing what the future has in store for the Lyric.

"I think it's a great project and this is just one phase," he said. "I look at what they want to do upstairs, they've got more work to do on the basement. The bones of that building are really solid, I was looking at it just last night again. There is a tremendous opportunity there and Gord is quite a visionary guy. He's got some great plans that make a lot of sense."

The stage, lighting, and sound upgrades should be done by the fall according to McCall.
