An art installation celebrating Swift Current Centennial year has recently begun construction in the downtown core.

The project, that was approved by City Council in 2015, will have ten monuments depicting a notable event from each decade of Swift Current's history.

"It was a tough (decision) process because some decades were really busy and other were not," Tim Marcus Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Swift Current said. "It's a process that involved a fair number of people, including the artist that building the pillars."

The pillars that are being constructed by a Medicine Hat artist in Frank Rempel Centennial Plaza, will also have plaques on the backside of monuments describing what events are being depicted and other notable events that occurred during the decade.

"We not only wanted the monuments to last, but we wanted them to be something that would also be enjoyable," Marcus explained. "So when people are in the square, the monuments are enjoyable to look at and they can read the history of the events as well."

The legacy project which will cost approximately $100,000, will have half of the cost paid for by S3 Enterprises who made $50,000 contribution in 2015 to sponsor the plaza and name it in Rempel's honour.

Currently, four of the ten monuments are completed including the first three decades of Swift Current's history and the sixth decade from 1965-1974.
