On the evening of Saturday August 12th, the Astronomy Club at the Wilkinson Memorial Observatory in Eastend watched the Perseid Meteor Shower.

According to Joan Hodgins, Chairperson of the Club there were 20 people out for the viewing at the Observatory and in the first hour they counted over 50 meteorites and three big fire balls.

The full count of meteors on Saturday night ended up at 87.

Hodgins says that Sunday evening was not good for viewing as the skies were too cloudy.

This Monday morning August 21st the Astronomy Club will be watching the skies for the Solar Eclipse, that many residents of North America will be able to see.

Hodgins says the Observatory will have equipment set up in the Eastend Town Square Monday morning to view the Eclipse as well as individual glasses to use to watch.

She adds that the viewing in Eastend will be a partial Eclipse with 90% totality, which will be the best in the province.

The Solar Eclipse can be seen on Monday starting at about 10:15 a.m. and it will last for about three hours.

You are reminded that you should not look directly at the sun unless you are wearing proper eye protection during the Eclipse.
