The United We Roll Convoy reached Ottawa on Tuesday to support the oil and gas industry.

Cypress Hills-Grasslands Conservative MP David Anderson is a supporter.

He said while there's been a lot of protest from Indigenous rights activists, there are First Nations that are also supporters for building more pipelines.

"There's a concerted effort to make sure that Canadians will only hear one side of that issue, but the reality is there are Aboriginal communities who are participating, who are doing very well for their communities with the energy industry, and certainly we want to hear them as well as the other side that typically gets the attention."

Anderson said on a whole Canada has done a good job respecting the Constitution regarding Indigenous rights.

"Obviously there are obligations within the constitution, and I think that for the most part they have been respected. We have a lot of Aboriginal communities who want to be part of the energy industry. We know that. There are people leading the convoy out of northern Alberta who are part of Aboriginal communities and companies who have done well."

There have been two cases recently where courts have ruled the federal government - once under former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and once under current Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - didn't do enough in consulting First Nations about pipeline projects.
