Earlier today multiple fires broke out in the ditch of Highway #4 near the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park.

A total of seven fires lit up the side of the highway sometime after 1:00 pm.

Both the RM of Saskatchewan Landing and City of Swift Current Fire Departments attended the scene.

Darwin Johnsgaard is the fire chief and reeve for the RM of Saskatchewan Landing and said they were helped out by some timely rainfall.

"There was about half a dozen spots that had started," he said. "It was bone dry and we were just really lucky. All of a sudden a really heavy thunderstorm came along about the same time as the firefighters started to arrive."

Johnsgaard said that it's hard to say what caused the fire.

"It could be brakes," he said. "Someone brakes from going down that hill or something. Maybe they had something wrong and something was loose and dragging and causing sparks, you just never know."

The fires were completely out sometime around 2:00 p.m.
