After a byelection which was decided by just two votes earlier this week, Maple Creek's new councillor to be is settling into the position.

Jill Roy won last Wednesday's election after receiving 174 votes, with another mayoral candidate receiving just 172.

Roy, who is the office manager at Cowtown Livestock Exchange Inc, said that the election result still hasn't sunk in yet, but she is excited to take on the "big adventure."

When asked why she decided to run in the election, Roy said that she wanted to help out the town of Maple Creek.

"Well I just love my little town, and I want to be able to help in any way that I can, you know I've volunteered on several different committees, and I just think that I'm at the age now where maybe I've learned a little bit, and might have some valuable input to things."

Roy said that one of the things that she felt strongly about is the need to grow the economy of Maple Creek, which could be done by attracting young people.

"Mostly our economic development, it's important, we have to get that up and going really well, just to keep young people in the community, seniors are very important in the community, but for our economy to be steady and constant, and people wanting to come to Maple Creek and move here, we need to keep young people here and have things for them to do."

Speaking on how to keep the economy strong, Roy said that winter tourist attraction during winter could help.

"We just really have to promote what Maple Creek has to offer, tourism is a really big thing for Maple Creek, throughout the summer the businesses do really well because of tourism, but in the winter in kind of goes downhill, so we have to find something that's an all season to keep people wanting to come to Maple Creek."

Roy also said that there was sure to be a learning curve to being on city council, but said that other town councillors would help her learn the ropes.

Roy will be sworn in at the next town council meeting, which is November 27.
